The Dutch Heart Foundation (Hartstichting) has stated that an additional 5,000 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are needed to establish a comprehensive emergency response network in the Netherlands for cases of cardiac arrest. The organization is encouraging local residents to collectively acquire AEDs, perhaps through crowdfunding initiatives like BuurtAEDSolutions.
In the event of a cardiac arrest, the chances of survival are highest when emergency services are immediately contacted at 112, and CPR is initiated within six minutes using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). This portable device can administer an electric shock to restore the heart's rhythm during a cardiac arrest.
Currently, there are nearly 20,000 AEDs distributed across the Netherlands, along with 240,000 registered civilian responders who can be activated in case of a cardiac arrest. On average, these civilian responders arrive at the scene approximately 2.5 minutes faster than ambulances.
Improving Survival Rates According to the Dutch Heart Foundation, an additional 5,000 AEDs could significantly enhance the chances of survival for individuals experiencing cardiac arrest. Each year, around 17,000 people outside of hospitals suffer from cardiac arrests. In the 1990s, the survival rate was just nine percent. Today, it stands at nearly 25 percent.
